Johne's Consultant Network (JCN)

JML coordinates a network of consultant veterinarians who have received specialist training in the control of Johne's disease in deer. The 38 members of the Johne's Consultant Network are located nationwide but most are in the South Island, where most of the deer are. 

The JCN offers farmers local expertise to assist them in establishing a tailor-made on-farm JD control programme. A tailor-made programme is required because of the many ways in which deer farms are managed and the complex nature of Johne's disease.

JCN members are trained in a multi-day workshop that includes detailed information on the epidemiology of JD in deer, presentations from JML staff and Johne's experts in science and animal health, and case studies of infected farms. Workshop material is based on a comprehensive technical manual for the control of JD in farmed deer under New Zealand pastoral conditions. The manual,  'JDONE: Understanding Johne's Disease', was designed specifically for veterinarians and includes the latest science based information necessary for creating tailor-made JD control programmes for individual properties.
